The tiny house movement

Before I met Kellianne I was thinking of downsizing my living quarters from 880 to about 300 sq ft.  I’m all for the tiny house movement, and totally agree that we try to fill the space that we live in. Given that I only have a fraction of my attention to devote to my living space, a smaller house means being able to pay more attention to the details.

This guy has a company that designs and builds tiny houses.  He built one for himself that’s 96 square feet (8x12ft).

Homes are shrinking in America. After doubling in size since 1960, the national average dropped for the first time in nearly 15 years (by 9%, the size of an average room). But far from this new average of 2,000 plus square feet are the so-called tiny houses.

  1. It’s amazing to see this movement slowly gaining momentum in the United States.

People are no longer searching for bigger and “badder” things. Rather, people want things that are simple… things they can make the best use of with little waste (both wasted time and wasted resources).

“Quality over quantity.” I love it!

  2. While Jay’s houses are a bit on the expensive side they are incredibly beautiful. If you get a chance to visit one it’s worth going out of your way to see it. Jay often does design and building workshops around the US so he may be coming to a neighborhood near you soon.

I think it’s also important to mention that ‘tiny’ isn’t necessarily the right thing to focus on… ‘freedom’ is probably a better measure. Downsizing everything from possessions to debt gives us back more time and energy. I think that’s the true lesson if you read between the lines.
